General Information

The critical care term is an 8 week term that consists of 2 weeks of intensive care, 2 weeks of anaesthetics, and 4 weeks of emergency medicine.

In the emergency medicine component, you will spend 2 weeks in each of the Liverpool and Bankstown Emergency Departments.

During your rotation, you will be spending time seeing patients in the emergency department under the supervision of the senior medical staff.

You are expected to be present in the emergency department from Monday to Friday from 0800 - 1600.
You will be excused for the scheduled teaching sessions.

The emergency medicine rotation is divided into clinical and non-clinical components.

CLINICAL COMPONENT
This is the time you spend seeing patients in the emergency department.

Patient Logbook.
You will need to keep a logbook of the patients you see in the emergency department.
To achieve a satisfactory pass, you must have a minimum of patients in your logbook.
The logbook is intended to be reflective in nature, and you need to document one new fact that you have learnt about emergency medicine specific to each case.
The logbook will be subject to assessment at the end of your term.

Mini-CEX Evaluation's.
You will also need to submit 5 mini-CEX evaluations in order to achieve a satisfactory pass.
Each mini-CEX should be directed toward the 5 major objectives for the rotation (chest pain, shortness of breath, abdominal pain, altered mental state & trauma).
The mini-CEX evaluations can be completed at both Bankstown and Liverpool Hospitals.
These evaluations must be completed by the senior medical staff (Consultants, Registrars or CMO's).

NON-CLINICAL COMPONENT.
Teaching will focus on the 5 most common presentations that are seen in the emergency department;
  1. Abdominal Pain
  2. Trauma
  3. Chest Pain
  4. Altered Mental State
  5. Shortness of Breath

In addition to these sessions, there will be practical skills sessions on;
  1. Advanced Life Support (attendance at this session will allow you to have this skill signed off in your procedures logbook).
  2. Basic emergency ECG interpretation.
  3. Trauma radiology
  4. Emergency chest x-ray interpretation

Case Presentations
Week 6 and 7 will involve case presentations.
These sessions are aimed at peer education, and you will be involved in educating your class colleagues.
You will have 10 minutes to present a case you have seen, and give a brief topic review specific to the case.
There will be 5 minutes for feedback and questions following your presentation.
This is a marked assessment and you need to achieve a satisfactory pass in order to complete your rotation.

Viva Examinations (Emergency Medicine & Intensive Care)
In week 8, there will be 2 viva examinations - one for emergency medicine, and one for intensive care medicine.
These will be case based and run for 10 minutes each.
They will be based on the topics covered in the teaching sessions during your attachment.

In order to achive a pass in the emergency medicine rotation, you will need to;
  1. Complete your patient log-book (50 patients)
  2. Complete 5 mini-CEX evaluations
  3. Attend scheduled teaching sessions
  4. Achieve a pass in the case-based presentation
  5. Achieve a pass in the viva examination
